Cyclists Need To Be Visible To Be Safe

Even though most of us have seen countless stickers on the back of car bumpers about the need for everyone to “share the road”, sharing the road effectively is something that is not being done as routinely as it should be. There are far too many accidents involving cyclists and automobiles. Almost daily there are accounts of accidents where the driver claims he just did not see the bike and the rider and therefore was unable to avoid the collision. Chances are that these drivers are not lying, but more likely that they were just not paying very close attention. When bikes and automobiles share the same roadways, close attention simply must be paid. Cycling has become a main stream sport that continues to gain popularity among people of all ages. With an increasing number of cyclists on the roadways, steps must be taken to increase awareness of the bikes, improve the visibility of those on the bikes and to reduce the number of collisions that take place.

Cycling is an activity that has many benefits, both physical and mental. It is a great way to increase stamina, strength and overall physical fitness. It also affords an individual the opportunity to be outside in the fresh air and to observe nature while they are getting a great workout rather than being stuck inside of a hot, stuffy gym somewhere. Many cyclists feel that it is rather addicting (in a positive way) in that they can’t seem to let much time pass between their rides. It’s a fun sport to do by yourself or with a partner or with a group. While the benefits of this sport are many, there are also challenges.

Because the human body on a steel frame bicycle is no match for an automobile, precautions should be taken that will provide the maximum potential for safety when the two are operating in close proximity. The law requires that drivers are legally responsible for keeping their eyes out for cyclists and when needing to pass that they do so at a safe distance. In addition to the obvious need for drivers to be more aware and alert to the presence of cyclists, riders can also make certain changes which will improve their safety such as the wearing of bright- colored clothing which can be more easily seen. By law, cyclists are required to have their bikes equipped with lights and reflectors at night. While this is mandatory, the wearing of reflective clothing is not and yet it is something that could be a big safety factor. Research has shown that cyclists wearing high visibility clothing are seen by drivers at a much greater distance than those who are not wearing such clothing.

Cyclists would do well to consider the advisability of wearing clothing that would be readily visible any time they are sharing the road with automobiles.
